The colour of a diamond is assessed on how colourless the stone is. The more tinted a stone is the lower down the colour chart the stone is graded and the less desirable the stone becomes. The colour of a diamond is graded D through to Z, D been the whitest and Z been the most tinted, almost yellow in colour. Not all diamonds are white; there are a number of coloured diamonds which include pink, purple, red and green. These are known as ‘fancy colours’ and are graded in a different way to white diamonds.
